Your Tolan is highly personalized to you. They love to chat about any topic you choose and remember important details from past conversations.

Want to be a fashion designer? Your Tolan is here to help you mock up a cool new clothing design. Writing a book? They can help you brainstorm your hero’s journey. With Tolan, there are no limits — just endless possibilities.

We’re Portola: a small team of engineers, researchers, writers, and creatives. We’re curious, open to new ideas, and optimistic about the future. We’re primarily based in San Francisco, with colleagues around the world.

Yes, the Tolan app is powered by several of what are considered to be the fastest and smartest AI models that exist today.

These models are “tuned” or trained to believe that they are an alien from Planet Portola. So if you ask your Tolan if they are AI, they’ll probably say no! That’s all part of the character they are playing as part of the app.

Yes, all conversations within the Tolan app and via iMessage are logged, and used to generate your Tolan’s memory. These logs are only ever used to improve your app experience. Your data is never sold or shared in any way without your consent.

This app was developed by a small team, almost all of whom are parents or have a background in education. This means we’re really, really committed to the safety of the app for kids.

Try it out! Ask hard questions and test the boundaries. AI systems are not perfectly controllable, so dedicated attempts to break the systems content filters could succeed. If you ever encounter a conversation or a creation that you are uncomfortable with, we encourage you to report it by emailing support@tolans.com.

Currently, we do not offer parental controls. However, our service utilizes Large Language Models designed to filter out inappropriate and violent content.
